Tackle Catalytic Converter Theft

Retainagroup, the car security marking and registration systems specialist, is working with Ford to provide a simple yet effective method of permanently marking catalytic converters to give them a unique identity.

Criminal gangs across the UK are stealing catalytic converters from vehicles at an increasing rate. The precious metal content (usually platinum) fetches around £100 for just a few minutes' work. Previously there was no way of identifying one converter from another, so thieves ran a low risk of being charged, even if caught.
Each mark, applied to the casing of the catalytic converter, comprises a logo (the manufacturer's or Retainagroup's International Security Register), a unique seven-digit code and a 24-hour telephone number. Once the mark has been applied, the unique code is recorded with vehicle and owner details on the register and can be verified immediately at any time, day or night, 365 days per year. The service is free except for the cost of the call and means that thieves stealing a marked and registered converter will put themselves at risk of being apprehended and charged.
Marking and registration packs will be available from Ford dealerships either as individual customer kits priced at £11.87 inc VAT, or 'fleet packs' containing marking material for 30 vehicles, priced at £136.85 inc VAT.
Paul Lambotte, Head of Unit for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) said: "The theft of catalytic converters has become an increasing problem for vehicle owners. This crime disables the vehicle and has an environmental impact. AVCIS welcomes initiatives, such as catalytic converter marking, that enable the identification of stolen goods that are found in criminals' possession."
DC Ian Elliott of the Metropolitan Police Stolen Vehicle Unit added: "Such a proactive approach by Ford and Retainagroup to something that is heading towards epidemic levels in the UK ought not to go unrecognised. It is public spirited initiatives like this, working in partnership with local crime reduction officers, which enable acquisitive crimes such as catalytic converter theft to be significantly reduced. Due to the items being traceable, they are less attractive to thieves because the perpetrators stand a significant risk of being caught and charged.

Ford's new ultra-frugal Fiesta was unveiled at the British International Motor Show, completing the company's small, medium and large car ECOnetic line-up.

The wraps came off the 76.3mpg all new Fiesta ECOnetic - Britain's greenest family car with CO2 emissions of 98g/km. On sale from £11,800 by the end of this year, the all new Fiesta ECOnetic joins the existing Mondeo and new Focus ECOnetic models.

Ford Motor Company has added a high-tech new automatic transmission to its line-up, one which achieves the fuel economy of a manual gearbox but with the comfort and convenience of a normal auto.

Called "PowerShift", the new lightweight transmission uses the latest electronically-controlled twin-clutch technology to change gear, and therefore does not need the complex and weighty sub-systems such as torque converter or planetary gears of regular auto boxes.

Not only efficient, the new six-speed PowerShift is simple to use and yet with a sporty personality. Both up and down-shifts are executed faster than normal auto gearboxes, and faster than drivers can achieve with a manual.

PowerShift is available on either the Ford Focus or C-MAX ranges and with the 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine. Two states of tune are available, 136PS or 110PS. Regardless of power rating, body style or series, all Focus models equipped with PowerShift offer a combined fuel economy of 48.6mpg, with average CO2 emissions of just 154 g/km while C-MAX delivers 47.9mpg and 159g/km.

Driving with the Ford PowerShift transmission is as simple and easy as a conventional automatic transmission. The system uses a standard automatic gear lever in the centre console with the usual P, R, N and D settings. The gear lever can also be moved laterally to a parallel gate should the driver choose a sportier style and the option of shifting manually.

Mondeo Estate Wins Best Towcar

Ford's Mondeo Estate has won another prestigious towcar award. It is the overall winner of the second annual Towcar awards, as judged by experts from What Car?, Practical Caravan and the Camping and Caravanning Club.

This triumph comes less than a year after the Ford Mondeo was awarded the Caravan Club Towcar of the Year title, the UK's longest running towing competition.

This latest award is the result of a rigorous towcar testing programme carried out on 53 cars. The vehicles were tested for their towing ability and a number of other qualities including driving performance when not towing, practicality, value for money and safety.

The cars are judged in five categories by kerb weight, which helps buyers choose the best match for their caravan or trailer.

Ford cars were winners in two categories: the Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Titanium 5-door hatchback won the under 1425 kg category and the Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi Titanium auto won the 1575-1724 kg category. The Ford C-MAX was also highly recommended as the budget choice in its category.

However, it was the Ford Mondeo Estate that emerged as the overall winner. What Car? Editor Steve Fowler said: "The standard of towcars tested is higher than ever, yet the overall winner was a clear decision. The Mondeo is not just a great towcar; it's also a great car when there isn't a caravan or trailer hitched to the back. It's comfortable, spacious, good to drive and affordable."

S-Max Steals Top UK Security Award

Ford S-MAX has been named winner in the large MPV category at the British Insurance Car Security Awards for the second year running.

The Awards rate vehicles according to their resistance to theft and break-ins and are backed by Thatcham, the Department for Transport, UK Insurers and supported by the Home Office.

The S-MAX achieved the highest score with Galaxy a close second - scooping the key awards in the highly competitive large MPV category.

Standard security features on the S-MAX include Thatcham Category 1 alarms, remote-control deadlocks, engine immobiliser and visible VIN numbers. The inclination (tilt) sensor was also a key factor in the overall result.

Ford Kuga Prices Announced

The all-new Ford Kuga, Ford's first entry into the growing crossover segment, will go on sale in June 2008. Prices start from £20,495 for the Zetec and £22,495 for the Titanium.

The Ford Kuga is based on Ford's acclaimed C-car architecture - well proven in both the Ford Focus and the Ford C-MAX. Distinctive design, intelligent AWD system, and impressive on and off-road ability make the Kuga an attractive proposition.

Powered by the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi 136PS diesel engine with standard particulate filter and six-speed manual transmission, Kuga comes with full-time Haldex intelligent AWD system. The engine provides 320Nm of torque at 2,000rpm and 340Nm in transient overboost. With combined fuel consumption of 44.1mpg it also achieves class-leading levels of CO2 - just 169 g/km.

Kuga is only available in two specifications - Zetec and Titanium. Standard features include - keyless start, 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Ford Easy fuel, Thatcham category 1 alarm and MP3 connector.

Performance & Technology Added To MPVs

Ford's range of stylish and versatile seven-seater MPVs now offers an enhanced engine and technology mix.
The Ford S-MAX and Galaxy are the latest to offer the new flagship 175PS TDCi engine.

Developed for performance, the 175PS 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine is the largest displacement and most powerful diesel installation available in Ford of Europe's passenger cars. It provides a sustained 400Nm of torque at 1,750rpm for effortless overtaking ability combined with exceptional economy.

There is also a 10PS power boost, from 130PS to 140PS, for 2.0-litre diesel S-MAX and Galaxy models equipped with an automatic gearbox. Another new 2.0-litre Ford MPV variant is the S-MAX and Galaxy flexifuel vehicle (FFV) - capable of running on any mix of bioethanol and petrol in the same fuel tank.

Ford S-MAX and Galaxy are more advanced inside as well as out. Wireless Bluetooth® mobile phone connectivity becomes standard across the range.

The range-topping S-MAX Titanium adds Solar Reflect Windscreen, ambient lighting and chrome door handles as standard, while the Titanium X Pack now includes bi-xenon lights.

Galaxy Ghia adds new 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, Solar Reflect Windscreen, ambient lighting and rear compartment air conditioning.

A new Ghia X Plus Pack is now available, with 18-inch alloys, bi-xenon lights and powered rear quarter windows to complement full leather trim and glass panorama roof.

Entry-level versions of the S-MAX and Galaxy now become Edge models instead of LX in line with changes to other Ford products.

The S-MAX and Galaxy colour palate is also refreshed with Chill, Morello (aubergine), Blazer Blue and Hypnotic Silver joining existing popular shades.

Adjustable Pedals

Ford has developed a new feature which could mean safer and more comfortable motoring at the flick of a switch - adjustable pedals.

For some drivers, adjusting just seat and steering wheel does not achieve the comfort or level of control for safe and enjoyable driving.

Adjustable pedals can provide Ford Focus and C-MAX owners with a perfectly tailored driving position. Pedals can be moved up to 55mm closer to the seat.

This adjustment improves comfort and control for drivers who find that the pedals are too far away when seat and steering wheel are ideally set.

Adjustable pedals are also an extra convenience in cases where a vehicle is driven regularly by two or more people. Different sized drivers can be accommodated without having to make multiple changes to the seating position and mirrors.

The Adjustable Pedal System uses an electrical motor to move the pedals, and the control switch is located on the side of the seat cushion. Its 'zero position' is the same as with fixed pedals, so the same maximum amount of legroom is available. All adjustments bring the pedal bank closer to the driver's seat.

This system is available as an option on New Ford Focus and C-MAX with either manual or automatic transmissions.

Created by Ford TeamRS, the company's dedicated performance vehicle arm, the 2008 Focus ST benefits from the new exterior and interior styling changes introduced across the rest of the Focus line-up earlier this year. Importantly though, while offering new technologies and features, the car's well-honed dynamics remain untouched.

At the heart of the matter is the familiar 225 PS, 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder Duratec engine. Powerful, and accompanied by a suitably sporty soundtrack, this powerhouse delivers a potential 150mph top speed in tandem with 0-62mph acceleration in just 6.8 seconds.

Ford Ranger New Colour Announced

Ford have announced that the top-of-the-range 3.0-litre Ranger Wildtrak will join the sport stable with a new colour: Performance Blue with white stripes. On sale now at £20,900.

Ford of Britain has given their commercial vehicle family another derivative with sporty looks by offering a limited number of Ranger Wildtrak models in Performance Blue with "Le Mans" style white bonnet stripes.
Performance Blue has become an established colour with sporty connotations within Ford of Europe's passenger car portfolio - previously adorning the Focus RS - and it's currently available on the new Focus ST and Fiesta ST performance models.

Ranger Wildtrak is a highly specified model with ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), air conditioning, heated front seats and an off-road information centre as standard equipment. The powerful 3.0-litre Duratorq TDCi 156PS engine launched last spring is standard on Ranger Wildtrak and it completes the package on this very capable, stylish, and dependable pick-up.

TPMS and DDS

Advanced systems which alert the driver if a tyre is losing pressure while the car is in motion are providing Ford customers with safer motoring.
Ford's sophisticated tyre pressure monitoring systems detect when a tyre is deflating, and trigger in-car warning systems that enable the driver to stop and check.
Even regular tyres checks can fail to reveal if a tyre is damaged or already punctured. Ford's automated system is able to monitor the tyres at all times when the vehicle is in use and can help to draw the driver's attention to a problem before it becomes a safety issue.

Michael Kremer, Ford wheel and tyre engineer explains: "Tyres play a critical role in the car's performance, providing that vital link between the vehicle and the road. Tyre pressure monitoring systems can help make motoring safer by giving drivers an instant alert when a tyre is losing pressure, so that immediate action can be taken.
"These automated systems are not a substitute for regular tyre pressure checks but they do provide an important additional safety measure in cases where a tyre becomes damaged or punctured and the driver isn't aware of the problem.
"Keeping your tyres correctly inflated can also reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, so these systems can help provide cost and environmental benefits too."

Ford offers two levels of tyre pressure monitoring technology, providing customers with effective and secure systems that deliver excellent value for money.
The Ford Focus and the Ford Kuga can both be specified with a tyre Deflation Detection System (DDS), which uses the same sensors as the anti-lock brake/electronic stability programme systems to detect when one or more tyres are becoming deflated.
When the DDS system identifies that a tyre is deflating, it triggers alarm chime and visual warning message to advise the driver to stop and check the tyre pressures and investigate the cause.

The Ford Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy are available with a system ideally suited to Ford's sophisticated large car range. The Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses sensors in each wheel to measure the actual pressure in all four tyres, and compares these pressures against the recommended settings. If deflation is detected the driver is warned via an alarm chime and visual warning in the instrument display.
